An RO water purifier is a necessity in many Indian cities due to underground water pollution. If the TDS is above 500 or if any of the sensitive contaminants like sulfates, nitrates, fluorides or heavy metals are higher than standards set by ISI, then, you need an RO water purifier. Unfortunately, a large part of India falls under this category, especially in areas where borewell is used for drinking water instead of rivers.

When buying an RO water purifier, you need to ensure that the water purifier has several other membranes too. They are UV chamber to deactivate any pathogens like bacteria, virus, fungi etc. You also need an activated carbon filter to remove any odour or volatile organic compounds including chlorine. The most controversial of the membranes is the UF filter. Many feel this is an unnecessity. But, that is not always the case. Some water purifiers use MTDS ( Manual TDS adjuster) to regulate the water TDS to palatable level. Here, raw water is mixed with RO purified water to increase the TDS. In such cases, UF is necessary so that any pathogens or suspended particles including heavy metal is removed from the water. On the other hand, if the RO water passes through a mineral cartridge to regulate the TDS levels, then, UF membrane is not a necessity. Rather, it is something just good to have. But if the manufacturers charge extra just for UF when there is a mineral cartridge, avoiding it won’t harm you in any way.

So, let us now take a look at the best RO water purifiers in India.

“ It is highly advised to install a pre-filter outside the water purifier to capture larger sediments. This improves the life of the other membranes inside the water purifier”

Our Top Recommendation

Out of the options, our top recommendation is the HUL Pureit Eco Water Saver Mineral RO+UV+MF AS Water Purifier. It has a huge tank measuring 10 litres which ensures you have enough water for all your needs. The water wastage is comparatively lower and as it uses a mineralizer cartridge instead of MTDS adjuster, the water taste is also better. Moreover, the sediment filter is large compared to brands like Eureka Forbes and it is free with the water purifier. Overall, we recommend it as the best RO water purifier in India. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, Sure Delight NXT is also a good option to consider. It has a 5 litre tank with MTDS and UF.

While most other options on the list has 5-7 litre capacity, HUL Pureit Eco has a whopping 10 litre capacity.

This water purifier doesn’t have an MTDS ( Manual TDS adjuster). Instead, water is passed through a mineral cartridge to absorb calcium and magnesium and thereby increase the TDS to palatable level. Yet another advantage of HUL Pureit is that while other brands sell sediment filter at a separate charge, you get it as a package along with the Pureit Eco.

Inside, there are carbon filter, RO filter, mineralizer cartridge, MF cartridge and UV chamber. Note that unlike other options discussed so that, HUL Pureit uses a MF cartridge instead of UF cartridge. MF captures particles upto 1 micrometer, while UF captures particles up to 1/10th of a micrometer. As you can understand, UF is superior to MF when it comes to capturing suspended particles. That being said, considering the water purifier doesn’t use MTDS, a UF filter isn’t really a necessity.

Yet another aspect worth noting is that its tank is not accessible to users. So, if you feel the need to clean the tank, you need to contact the brand and arrange a service.

One of the main upsides of this water purifier is its large tank of 10 litre capacity and comparatively lesser water wastage. To purify 10 litres of water, the water purifier wasted just around 12 litres, which is significantly lesser than other options. It took about 45 minutes to fill the tank. This was when the input TDS was around 700 ppm. The purified water had a TDS level of 45. Owing to the large capacity, the flow of the purified water is also comparatively higher.

The sediment filter is larger than what you find in other water purifiers. It lasts for 2000 litres, while the filters inside lasts for 6000 litres. The filter set costs about Rs. 4500 and the sediment filter costs about Rs. 1000/- They usually need to be changed annually.

HUL Pureit Advanced Pro Mineral RO+UV Water Purifier

HUL pureit advanced pro

HUL Pureit Advanced Pro has some similarities with the previous option. It too comes with a mineral cartridge instead of MTDS. Also, you get an external sediment filter along with the water purifier without having to pay extra.

The water purifier has a comparatively smaller tank measuring 7 litres, which is enough for 3-4 members. The water passes through sediment filters, activated carbon, RO, mineralizer and UV. It doesn’t have UF filter and you are not missing out on anything as raw water is never mixed with RO water in this purification system.

Unlike Pureit Ecosaver, water wastage is a tad higher in this model, wasting around 12 litres for filling the 7 litre tank.

If you are alright with a smaller tank, we recommend Pureit Advanced Pro over the former option as it is far more competitively priced.

Sure Delight NXT RO+UV+UF Water Purifier

Aquaguard sure delight nxt- best ro water purifier in India

Sure Delight NXT by Aquaguard is one of the best-selling and budget-friendly RO water purifiers in India. There are 2 variants in this water purifier. One comes with UF and the other without. As mentioned earlier, as this water purifier uses MTDS to adjust the water TDS, it is advisable to opt for the model that has a UF membrane.

The water purifier comes with a 5 litre tank, which is usually just enough for a family with 3-4 members. The water purifier has indicators that show the on-off, tank full status and when it is time to change the filters.

The water passes through several purification stages. First, they pass through i-filter, which is essentially a sediment filter that captures large suspended particles. Then, it passes through Chemi-block, which is an activated carbon filter that absorbs chlorine, VOCs and any odours. Next stage is the RO cartridge that captures any dissolved solids, pathogens and heavy metals. After this, raw water is mixed at desired level to regulate the TDS to a palatable level. Then, the water is passed through UF membrane to remove any pathogens or suspended heavy metals. The final stage is the UV chamber in which the UV light kills any pathogens left in the water.
When the input water TDS is around 900, it takes around 30 minutes to fill the tank. Around 12 litres of water is wasted for filling 5 litre tank. This may increase or decrease depending on the input TDS levels. User reviews suggest anywhere from 10-18 litres of water getting wasted for filling a 5 litre tank.

The membranes inside the water purifier generally last for 6000 litres. Pre-filter, if installed, usually lasts for around 2000 litres. The replacement cost of the entire filter set is around Rs.4000/- Overall, the upfront cost is lower. But, the filter replacement cost will be almost half the device cost.

KENT Supreme Alkaline Water Purifier

Kent supreme alkaline- best ro water purifier in India

Kent Supreme Alkaline water purifier is one of the expensive options on the list that provides alkaline water. Studies have found alkaline water to be helpful in managing acidic reflux and other gastrointestinal diseases. However, it is yet uncertain whether prolonged usage of alkaline water may have any undesired side-effects in the long run.

This water purifier from Kent comes with a TDS adjuster similar to the previous model. Here, water first passes through activated carbon filter to remove any odours and VOCs. Then, a part of it goes through the RO membrane and the TDS and other dissolved and suspended contaminants are removed. The other part goes through a UF membrane to remove any suspended contaminants. This water is mixed with the RO water in desired level to adjust the TDS. Then, it passes through an alkaline cartridge to increase the pH and finally into UV chamber to kill any pathogens left in the water.

An advantage claimed by Kent is that you can direct the waste water from RO membrane to an overhead tank for using for other purposes. However, it requires substantial plumbing work and may not be feasible for all.

The Kent’s tank measures 8 litre in capacity. It takes around 40 minutes to fill with water. When the TDS of input water was around 950, it wasted around 12 litres of water to fill the 8 litre tank.

Just like the other options, the filters last for around 6000 litres. With Kent, you have to purchase an additional sediment filter that has to be installed outside and it costs around Rs. 1300/-

Its AMC costs around Rs.6000 which includes one time filter replacement and servicing.

If you are not keen about the alkaline water, you could opt for Kent Supreme which costs about Rs.2500 lesser.

Aquaguard Aura RO+UV+UF+Taste Adjuster(MTDS)

The main differentiating factor of Aquaguard Aura is its copper and zinc booster cartridge which is supposed to be beneficial for health. However, others opine that considering copper deficiency to be extremely rare, supplementing copper isn’t going to provide any added benefit. So, it is a personal choice whether to opt for it or not. Considering the tank doesn’t have copper lining, you don’t have to worry about copper toxicity. So, even if it doesn’t prove immensely beneficial to your health, it definitely won’t harm you.

The water purifier has a 7 litre tank. It takes around 30 minutes to fill the tank when the TDS level is around 950.

Water first passes through a sediment filter, which Aquaguard calls i-Filter. Then, it goes through Chemi-block which gets rid of any odour and VOCs like chlorine. The next stage is RO purification after which raw water is mixed with the help of the TDS adjuster valve so that the water is palatable. In the next stage, water is passed through UV chamber for sterilization. After this, the UF membrane purifies any other suspended contaminants. In the final stage, water is passed through copper and zinc cartridge so that it gets fortified with these minerals.

The water purifier wastes around 14 litres of water for filling the 7 litre tank. This is almost at par with the Sure Delight+ which is also a product from Aquaguard.

Just like other options, the water purifier’s filters last for 6000 litres. Note that if the water TDS at your place is higher than 1000, you could opt for an additional membrane which is a patented technology by Eureka Forbes that helps enhance the life of other membranes, especially that of the RO.
